Archerfish coordinate fin maneuvers with their shots

چکیده
ABSTRACT Archerfish down a variety of aerial prey from range distances using water jets that they adjust to the size and distance their prey. We describe here characteristic rapid fin maneuvers, most notably pectoral pelvic fins, are precisely coordinated with release jet. discovered these maneuvers in two fish, which had been characterized detail, trained shoot fixed positions at targets different heights remained stable during shots. Based on findings individuals, we examined shooting-associated movement 28 further archerfish species could freely chosen heights. Slightly before onset jet, time when shooter remains stable, fins all shooters switched asynchronous low-amplitude beating synchronized forward flap. The duration subsequent backward flap were robust across individuals shooting angles but depended target height. slowly adducted start jet stopped moving after its release. All other also showed sequence activation, some starting ∼0.5 s shot. Our suggest shooting-related needed stabilize shooter, an important component precise powerful far-distance archerfish.

saccades. Neurons in the higher-order lateral intraparietal area keep track of elapsed time between behavioural events [5]. It is not established whether the time coding in these cells is influenced by saccades; however, our data reveal some MST neurons that do not have saccade-related reductions in latency, thus showing that some neurons in the parietal cortex operate independent of eye moveme...

What are archerfish? Members of a family of seven species of perciform fish, all of the genus Toxotes. These opportunistic hunters successfully cope with widely varying environmental conditions and are broadly distributed in mangrove-lined estuaries and freshwater streams of southeast Asia, eastwards from Sri Lanka to Vanuatu (the former New Hebrides) and southwards from the Philippines to Nort...
متن کاملArcherfish Actively Control the Hydrodynamics of Their Jets
Among tool-using animals [1-4], none are known to adaptively change the hydrodynamic properties of a free jet of water--a task considered difficult in human technology [5-7]. Hunting archerfish can strike their targets with precisely aimed water jets (e.g., [8, 9]), but they are also presently thought to be unable to actively control the hydrodynamics of their jets [8-13]. By using specifically...

Archerfish are renowned for dislodging aerial prey using well-aimed shots of water. Recently it has been shown that these fish can shape their aerial jets by adjusting the dynamics of their mouth opening and closing. This allows the fish to adjust their jet to target distance so that they can forcefully hit prey over considerable distances. Here, we suggest that archerfish use the same techniqu...
